Have you ever entered a friend’s or relative’s residence and observed that their walls resembled cheddar cheese? Or that their artwork, photographs, or paintings are not only tilted but also appear extremely unbalanced or as if they were created by a group of teenagers? Here are some tips to avoid making these mistakes in your own home.

  1. When putting together a gallery wall, give each piece about 2 to 3 inches of breathing room. To make sure everything looks perfect, trace each item onto butcher paper and cut them out. Then, use washi tape or painter’s tape to stick the cutouts onto the wall, and feel free to move them around until you’re happy with the look.

  2. When you’re hanging art on a plain wall without anything below it—like furniture or other art—try to center the image about 60 inches from the floor. It’s easy to make the mistake of hanging art too high, but the goal is to have it at eye level so everyone can enjoy it without straining their necks.

  3. To give your space a nice, balanced feel when you’re showing off art above a big piece like a sofa, bed, or sideboard, aim for the art to be about two-thirds the width of the furniture. Also, try to hang the art about 4 to 8 inches above the furniture below it.

  4. If you’re decorating a small room or even one with a small wall, instead of covering it with lots of pictures, try using one large piece of artwork centered at 60 inches from the floor. It will make the whole space feel bigger and more impressive.
